What is Halloween?

Halloween has its origins in the ancient festival of Samhain  (pronounced sow-win—the Celtic word for summer's end). 

Samhain marked the end of the summer and the beginning of winter: the transition from the time of the living to the time of the dead. 

The last crop had been gathered and cattle brought down from the pastures to be slaughtered,  the souls of the deceased would visit home and a place was set at the table for them. 

Druids (religious, legal, and medical leaders) would contact the other side and make predictions about the future, which were a great source of comfort during the long, dark winter.

They also built huge sacred bonfires and sacrificed crops and animals to the Celtic deities for protection and people wore costumes of animal heads and skins  (to trick the more mischievous spirits) and placed skulls of ancestors around for more protection.

When the celebration was over, the people re-lit their hearth fires (which they had extinguished earlier that evening) from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

Beneath all the candy and fun we have around Halloween these days, the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is still at its thinnest.

What is the veil?

The veil is the illusion of separation between earthly life and the divine truth of eternity and oneness with all that is. The veil creates the illusion that because physically we are separate, spiritually we are separate as well.

The Collective Intelligence of the universe created this veil which serves to limit our awareness of the Infinite. On passing through the veil and taking on a human body, we forget who we really are. We forget our shared divine heritage so we can learn spiritual principles here on Earth School. Earth School is intense and we learn more quickly here than in Spirit. But it would be cheating if we came in with all the answers to the test.

When we meditate or pray or have a mystical experience, we can see beyond the veil. 

And in October in the Northern Hemisphere (May in the Southern Hemisphere), particularly around the end of the month, the Wheel of the Year naturally thins the veil for us as it turns from the realm of life and growth to the realm of death.

This transition is sacred. And it's why we love Autumn. We can feel the change; we can feel the truth of the Universal—it's right here!  Don't you just love breathing in the Autumn air and slowing down for a minute?
